December 7th, 2009: Design Updates

To our fellow sponsors:

Time for some December updates! Winter is fast approaching, and the team has been quite busy! All of our Design Team leaders (http://baja.rit.edu/design.htm) have been hard at work to create and perfect their respective designs:

Frame: Evan has been tediously working on the car’s chassis in “Solid Works”, which is the computer software we use to design parts for our car. From frame points, tab positions, and firewall data, Evan is close to finalizing his design and start the fabrication process.

Suspension: Dick is calculating the final settings for his front and rear points. He is currently researching how to add adjustable toe and camber settings for his design. Dick has worked closely with Evan’s frame design so that they are both on the same page.

Driveline: Matt Macchione has been working to design a new gearbox and has also done testing with different clutch springs to determine an optimum gearing for the car. Matt plans to have a completed design for his gearbox before Christmas break.

Brakes: Phil has redesigned the previous brake caliper from last year. He is looking to put finishing touches on his design and then perform FEA (Finite Element Analysis) and diagnostic tests on his caliper.

Composites: Rob has been exceptionally busy in the world of composites. He has been working on composite designs for a variety of different components on the car. In addition, he has also been experimenting with injection molding. Rob has taken a leadership role by training a variety of members to aid him in his extensive composites projects.

Steering: Mike has currently worked on an independent study to determine strain gauge testing for front end steering components. He has worked with Dick and Evan in developing points for our steering assembly, and he has also experimented with tire pressure testing.

Manual Manufacturing: Jeff has been meticulously designing a variety of components for the car. He is looking to have a multitude of parts completed after winter break.

Media: Chrissy has worked to completely redesign our sponsorship brochure. She has also aided Ryan Hurley in updating the visual components for our website.
